Disclaimer

Short version: test every code before you print it, and treat the advice on this site as a starting point rather than a guarantee.

Always verify a code before printing#

This is the one that actually costs money. We generate codes to the ISO/IEC 18004 standard and test the encoder against independent decoders, but whether a particular printed code scans depends on things we have no control over: print resolution, ink spread, paper or substrate, laminate and glare, the size you chose, the contrast you chose, the lighting where it ends up, the angle people scan from, and the camera and software on their device.

Scan the finished artwork, on more than one phone, at the distance and in the lighting people will really use, before committing to a print run, signage, packaging, engraving or anything else you cannot cheaply redo. We accept no responsibility for reprinting costs or lost business arising from a code that does not scan in the field.

General information, not professional advice#

The guidance on this site — recommended print sizes, error correction levels, contrast, quiet zones, when to choose one code type over another — is general information based on the specification and on common practice. It is not legal, regulatory, financial, security or other professional advice, and it does not account for your specific circumstances. Where a QR code carries regulatory weight, such as payment information, product traceability, medical labelling or ticketing, get advice from someone qualified in that field.

You are responsible for what you encode#

We do not see, review, store or moderate the content you put into a code, because it never reaches us. What a code points to, and whether that destination is accurate, lawful, safe or still online, is entirely your responsibility. A QR code is a neutral encoding: it will faithfully carry a correct address and an incorrect one alike.

Destinations and third-party sites#

A link QR code opens a page we do not control. We make no representation about the availability, accuracy, security or content of any destination, whether it is your own site or someone else’s. The same applies to any external site referenced in our articles.

Availability#

We aim to keep the site online but do not guarantee it. It may be unavailable for maintenance, hosting problems or reasons outside our control. Because codes are generated in your browser and downloaded to your device, an outage does not affect codes you have already made — they contain their own content and do not depend on this site continuing to exist.

Relationship to our other terms#

This page sits alongside our Terms of Service, which contain the binding warranty exclusions and limitation of liability, and our Privacy Policy. If this page and the Terms ever conflict, the Terms take precedence.
